Arsenal chase cut-price Xavi Simons as PSG lose ground 3 hours ago.
L’Équipe report that Xavi Simons is against a return to PSG despite the Ligue 1 Champions looking to activate a €6m buy-back clause in the deal that saw the 20-year-old move to PSV Eindhoven last summer, with Arsenal among the clubs looking to capitalise.
Since leaving France Simons’ development, badly stunted at PSG despite the midfielder showing his potential in fleeting first team outings in Paris, has exploded. Although a usually number eight by trade with Paris, a total of 19 league goals made Simons the Eredivisie’s join top scorer this season. He also ranked second for goal creating actions with 1.06 per 90 while 148 progressive carries also placed Simons second in the league according to FBRef, underlining his ability to progress the ball, create chances and score goals.
This form has caught the eye of several major clubs as well as PSG. Simons however, is leaning towards a new challenge after a frustrating two years in Ligue 1 following his move from Barcelona in 2020 on a free transfer having graduated the club’s academy, La Masia. Crucially, Simons can join the club of his choosing as long as they match the €6m PSG need to pay, a major bargain for a player of his potential.
Currently on holiday in the Dominican Republic, Simons isn’t scheduled to return to Eindhoven until mid-July but another season there now seems unlikely too despite his contract running to 2027. His new club, however, will need to offer a regular start with Arsenal in the running, say the sports daily. PSV meanwhile are offering to name Simons as their captain should he stay put.
